y’all!… we are super excited to invite you to our Holiday Party at Kendra Scott! we have begun an amazing relationship with the super awesome ladies over at Kendra and are so excited about where it is headed. we are hosting, hopefully, the first of many events with them this month.
if you’re in the area, stop by Kendra Scott in City Centre and enjoy sips, sweets & 10% off while donating 10% to the Rise School of Houston!
our super fun relationship with the gals over at Kendra began back in September when we posted about Kendra Scott earrings being our Hot Product of the Week! gals from multiple stores saw it on social media and caught wind of it, then reached out to us to let us know that they love May Designs and were so excited to find out that the feeling was mutual!
Kendra Scott has an amazing team assembled across the state of Texas. her motto is family, fashion, and philanthropy and we could not agree more. Kendra and Mica hold a ton of the same values and from what we hear (about Kendra), and know (about Mica), are two of the most amazing ladies to work for! we were so excited when we found out that Kendra Scott had hosted an event benefitting the Rise School of Houston, since that is where Mica’s kiddos attend school and we have an entire collection devoted to giving back to Rise!
we happen to have a Kendra Scott store just down the block in Rice Village of Houston, and admit that we probably stop by a little too much. :) it’s just such an easy gift and you are sure to find something for yourself, as well!
we look forward to seeing y’all at City Centre next week and can’t wait to celebrate the holidays with the fabulous ladies of Kendra Scott!!
In celebrating Small Business Saturday, it brings up lots of nostalgia and excitement about the past 5 years.
What exactly is a small business? Five years ago, it meant me, running a Thanksgiving sale, hoping and praying to sell 100 books.
I packaged and shipped them all by myself out of my guest bedroom . . . I designed the website, worked on the eblasts, drove to the printer and stitcher (back them they were done at separate places!) and made sure each and order was perfect before I dropped them off at the post office. I touched each and every single email, phone call, custom order request, and physical order before it went out. Small business meant SMALL business. I wore the hats of all our “departments” and worked around the clock to make my little dream come true.
And we started to grow. People besides my friends and family started buying the books. Strangers?! Buying my stuff? Who could have imagined!
In January of 2011, I decided that if I wasn’t selling more books in December than I was at the beginning of the year, I would close up shop and divert my attention back to my original business — graphic and web design. So I invested in May Books (the company name at the time) with all I had to give and hustled for 11 months straight.
I convinced a dear friend and business mentor, John Carroll, to take a chance on me and partner with me. Help guide me through growth. Help me think through some of the business things I don’t naturally think about.
In November 2011, I attended one of Tory Johnson’s Spark and Hustle conferences. I was so inspired by all the successful stories I heard and women I met! I packaged up a few samples, waited in line to talk to Tory and share my little company and dream with her. She grabbed my books and said, wait – can these be customized? I said yes ma’am. Did I have a dedicated server? Yes! Could I do thousands of orders? Absolutely!
Her toned changed and she whispered she had a spot on an upcoming segment on Good Morning America and to overnight my samples to her NYC office. She looked me in the eye and said, “You better get ready, girl.” It was a 30 second conversation that changed my life forever.
Sure enough, on December 1st, before the segment on GMA even aired on the East Coast, the deal was up online and orders started pouring in. I had sold more books in one hour than I had the entire past 11 months. I called my partner, John, with excitement and panic and explained that we were going to need more staff. And quick.
The story of December 2011 deserves an entire other dedicated post – but the short version is that we received thousands of orders and they were all shipped and delivered by Christmas!!
Since then, we have hired 7 people for our home office, have a team of about 5 web developers and a printing team of over 20 people printing, stitching and shipping all the orders.
And today, on Small Business Saturday, we are still considered very much a small business. But everything has changed.
I can’t wait to see where the next five years brings us.
Thank you for your belief in me! Thank you for your patience with us when something goes awry with an order!
There are indeed real people behind the Instagramming. And designing. And stitching. And emails.
I am humbled and thankful for the commitment of so many of you who gave a girl a chance — and allowed her small business to grow . . . one notebook at a time.

yall! this Houston weather is really throwing us for a loop. this morning the high was 80* and rain all day. so we all threw on our favorite Hunter wellies to trek into the studio today. well, it has definitely rained all day, but now it is 51* and still dropping! ahhhhhh.
the heat is cranked and we are bundled up at our desks, catching up from our amazing trip to Memphis this week.
we LOVE our wellies and all happen to have a pair! Ashley loves hers so much… she rocked them on her wedding day and most definitely pulled them off (it was super rainy)!
let us know your favorite wellies and what you plan to rock them with this winter!
happy friday, friends!
